Sharapova faces Kvitova for women’s glory

It has been a long 7 years since Maria Sharapova was last in a Wimbledon final, winning it as a 17 year old but that must have seemed like a long way after the first three games of her semi-final. Sabine Liskicki had raced into a 0-3 lead and things were looking ominous for the girl that most people have been tipping as favourite for the tournament in the past few days.

Sharapova managed to dig deep though and very quickly turned the set around, winning it 6-4. This was followed with another 6-4 win in the second set, ensuring a passage to the final that may not have been predicted earlier on in the match. One of the aspects of tennis that people love is the way that it can turn and spin so quickly and this was just another example of this. The 2011 Women’s Wimbledon final is the first Grand Slam final Sharapova has reached since the 2008 Australian Open.

Sharapova starts as the favourite

It is not as if Sharapova will have everything her own way in the final though and Petra Kvitova will be desperate to defeat her. The 21 year old, who was defeated in last year’s semi final at Wimbledon, overcame a tough opponent in Victoria Azarenka and fully deserves her place in Sunday’s showcase final.

Kvitova took the first set convincingly with a 6-1 margin but Lisicki turned things around to win 3-6 in the second set. However, in the third and final set, Kvitova showed her dominance, finishing with another 6-1 margin and booking her place for Saturday. She may not be the favourite of the bookies going into the final but there is no reason why Kvitova cannot go on to claim a win that will see her listed alongside some of the greatest names in women’s tennis.

Women’s final is hotly anticipated

For a number of years many pundits and fans have agreed that the nature of women’s tennis has made it much more enjoyable to watch than the men’s games. The male sport has relied too much on power, even though some of the character appears to be coming back into the sport.

However, even casual tennis fans will be tuning in on Saturday to see the women’s final in the hope that it will be an entertaining and enjoyable game. With two top class players on show, this should be the case.
