Williams sisters both suffer Wimbledon exit

The Williams sisters have been synonymous with Wimbledon success for what seems like the best of living memory but 2011 may be the year where their dominance is finally over. Sure, there have been years when other females have managed to usurp them and injuries have taken their toll but the fact that both girls made an early exit from a tournament they dominated may suggest that their powers are on the wane.

Press focus has not been on the quality of play

The girls have grabbed as many, if not more, press inches and columns for their outfits this year as opposed to the quality of their tennis play so it is probably not a surprise that they have both suffered shocks.

Reigning champion knocked out

Serena was hoping to defend her title this year but a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) defeat at the hands of Marion Bartoli from France ended those dreams. Venus was also on the losing end of results going down meekly to Tsvetana Pironkova by 6-2, 6-3. This is a repeat of the score-line in the previous year’s quarter final.

Is the dominance of the Williams sisters coming to an end?

The dominance of the Williams sisters is best portrayed by the fact that they have picked up 9 of the previous 11 women’s singles titles at Wimbledon but those triumphs will seem like a long way away for Venus and Serena this year. Serena has suffered a terrible year with injury and illness and this defeat will see her drop to 175th in the world rankings. Even with 13 major triumphs behind her, it will take a lot for Serena Williams to bounce back from this defeat and what has been trying year.

Europe powers ahead at Wimbledon 2011

The interesting issue about the last 8 in the women’s singles tournament at Wimbledon comes with the fact that all eight of the quarter-finalists hail from Europe. This will be the first time that this has happened in the Open era of Wimbledon.

The fact that the Williams sisters have been knocked out of Wimbledon is likely to act as a major psychological boost for the remaining players and all will secretly fancy themselves to triumph in Saturday’s women’s final. There is of course a lot of tennis to be played between now and then but the early exit of the Williams sisters will raise the hope of others.
